What to Expect at Your Child’s First Gymnastics Class

Starting a new activity is exciting, but it is normal for both children and parents to have questions before the first day.

At Dana Mannix Gymnastics Center, we want every child’s first experience to feel welcoming and positive.

When you arrive, your child’s instructor will help them get oriented and join the class. Most classes begin with a warm-up before moving through several gymnastics events or stations. Depending on the class, students may work on floor skills, bars, balance beam, vault, trampoline, strength, flexibility, and basic body positions.

Children do not need to know any gymnastics skills before starting a beginner class. Instructors will introduce skills progressively and help each gymnast work at an appropriate level.

For clothing, fitted athletic wear works best. Leotards are always appropriate, but other comfortable athletic clothing may also work depending on the program. Long hair should be pulled back, and jewelry should generally be left at home.

Parents should also know that the first class may feel different for every child. Some children jump right in, while others need a little time to get comfortable in a new environment. Both are completely normal.

The most important goal during the first few weeks is for your child to become familiar with the class structure, instructor, and gym while beginning to build confidence.

Over time, consistency makes a big difference. Skills that seem difficult at first often become much easier as children gain strength, coordination, and experience.
